Bonjourno from Florence, Italy

Today we hopped on the bus and traveled along the Mediterranean coast to Italy. What a scenic drive we had…at least what I saw when I was awake. Our whole bus was rocked to sleep by the bus climbing up and down the mountains and through numerous tunnels….again…how in the world did people in ancient times get from one place to the next….very carefully, over several days/weeks/months!

We stopped in Pisa and Melissa, as well as every other tourist, tried to hold up the Leaning Tower while their compatriots snapped photos at various angles and holding positions. Next our first taste of Italian gelato (ice cream) YUM YUM! More shopping and bargaining and then back on the bus to Florence.

Tuscany is gorgeous; sunflowers are everywhere. We saw the quarries of Carrara from the road. This is where all the great artists of the Renaissance found their marble for the magnificent sculptures they created. The architecture of the little villages of Tuscany draws you in and makes you want to live here…reminds me of the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun”; it would be nice!!!!

Matteo is from this region and was very informative of the rivalries between various villages/cities and, of course, could enlighten us with the history of the area and its well known sons (Galileo, Michelangelo, Leonardo….).

A quick walk through Florence for a late dinner and then back to the hotel. We have an early morning tomorrow for our walking tour, museum visits and more gelato!!

Don't forget to check out the pictures...see link on the left.
